Brazilian choreographers Paulo Azevedo and Taís Vieira of the Compagnie Membros merge the athletic energy of street art and hip hop into a bold performance. Their radical piece Raio X deals with the disastrous conditions in their country’s prisons. Like an x-ray, Raio X reveals the injustice of the Brazilian prison system and exposes it as the mirror of a society marked by violence and poverty: explosive material for a choreography that raises its voice against oppression. For Membros dance is a social and highly political art form. This isn’t surprising given the social conditions in their hometown Macaé, situated 180 km north of Rio, which boasts one of the highest crimes rates of Brazil. Eight years ago, Azevedo and Vieira founded a cultural center and their own company there. Today Membros cia. de Dança is one of the most impressive and creative hiphop formations in South America.
